November 29, Retreat!!
After spending the night on the luxurious back deck of the abandoned Lighthouse Restaurant in Keithsburg Illinois I decided to head out early to try to beat the snow. I got two miserable miles out of town and the sprinkles started to feel like sleet.
I pulled into a driveway and turned around to face the road. To my left, a long miserable road to somewhere south. To my right, a shorter miserable road home. As I sat there with the engine idling, I thought "this is re-god-damned-diculus. A motorcycle in sleet. Not fun and definitely not smart" I started back to town and took up residence at the local gas station for the next 90 minutes until the sun came up.
Snow was starting to form on the road signs and half way home the rain on my windshield was turning to slush. I was glad to be heading home given the conditions. I hated to admit that I was giving up for the moment. This trip is my way of saying "screw it" to everything." I was glad that I was able to say "screw it" to screwing it.
Would there be a break in the weather in the next couple weeks? Would I have to postpone my trip till later and get a job for the time being? Minutes after I pulled into the driveway mom informed me that there seems to be a break in the weather on Wednesday. Have I mentioned what a cool mom I have? So now the plan is to try again on Wednesday. In the mean time I'll get some warm gloves and finish repairs on the right saddle bag so it actually locks. Till then- Ben.
